Shunkan is the Los Angeles-based indie rock project of singer-songwriter Marina Sakimoto. After signing to Rite Field Records in 2024, Sakimoto returned with Kamikaze Girl in 2025, a record co-produced with Alex Newport that marked Shunkan’s first album in more than five years. Before that, Shunkan released the debut full-length The Pink Noise in 2015, a breakout record that helped establish Sakimoto’s mix of sharp guitar work, melodic tension, and emotionally direct songwriting. Shunkan’s music melds raw, angular guitar work with anthemic melodies. Sakimoto’s vocals are confident and clear, often drowned in wash of layered guitars and synths. Critics note influences of second-wave emo and early-2000s alt-rock: the songs have catchy hooks over swirling distortion, balancing noise and pop sensibility.
